1. Pointing out that The Vampire Diaries manages to hire more “African American” and PoC actors than any other show on the CW (probably true) while refusing to acknowledge how that narrative treats these characters of color is missing the point. Big time. Let’s be real, I love that the majority of the witches on this show are women, and most of those, women of color. I love that the only creatures who have the power to literally shape this entire universe happen to be witches, many of whom happen to be: women of color. That, however, does not negate the fact that in a plot twist of inconceivable stupidity and convenience, these characters are frequently disempowered in the narrative, or erased; they are used as plot devices or Magical Negroes; and they generally have very little voice or visibility or narrative to call their own (or never fully-articulated narratives); and almost every single one of them has died.
I honestly think there is no right or wrong, there’s just is. It just is that Bonnie’s narrative either gets swept under the carpet or suddenly picked up when the plot calls for it. It just is that Bonnie, whose character in the books who not only played a large role in the story but also the sacred fucking love triangle itself, misses key episodes that affect not only her narrative but her as a character but yet manages to fill her dues ex machina quota of the week! It just is that out of the three main female characters (both being white and looked at as conventionally ’beautiful’ in society and the industry itself) she gets the distancing best friend’s younger brother as a love interest who decided to bring back his ex dead girlfriend because fuck knows why and also fuck guys, no really fuck guys - she’s got that high standards and morals and shit. Just is.
All of that can be actually okay but then, I remember, Bonnie McCullough and

and will continue to laugh at the face of everyone who tell me that ‘you’re wrong, stop making everything about race’ and their bullfuckingshit.
